Giants are so eager to seize chance to hit the summit
The Belfast Giants are aiming for top spot in the Elite League table because player-coach Derrick Walser got the response he wanted after a performance he branded as "unacceptable".
Walser slammed his players in the aftermath of a 5-1 defeat in Manchester in late November.
The Giants responded by going 10 games without defeat and have failed to pick up at least a point just twice in their last 17 games. That run has taken the team to within three points of the Cardiff Devils at the top and that could be cut to just a single point this evening when the Giants face the Nottingham Panthers at the SSE Arena, with the chance to hit the top when they meet Dundee Stars on Sunday.
"We're where we are because guys have picked up their game," said Walser. "You can't win anything when you are looking at the same four or five guys to step up every night.
"We have a lot of talent and the team has stepped up."
