Giants outscore Flyers in thriller

Belfast Giants 5-3 Fife Flyers

By Stuart McKinley

The Belfast Giants staged a superb comeback to beat the Fife Flyers and jump into third place in the Elite League.

And with that they have put the pressure on the Nottingham Panthers and Braehead Clan in the battle to gain home-ice advantage in the play-off quarter-finals.

After going 2-0 down to two powerplay goals - Michael Dorr at 9:12 and Nico Sacchetti 31 seconds into the second period - the Giants woke up and took control of the game with four unanswered goals.

Mike Forney sparked the fightback when he fired home at 22:30 and David Rutherford skated through all alone to level at 37:17.

That left the game in the balance going into the third period and it was the Giants who got their noses in front when Matt Nickerson scored from distance at 44:33. Jonathan Boxill was credited with the Giants' fourth at 53:56, but in truth he knew little about it as the puck hit him and deflected in.

Sacchetti brought it back to 4-3 with two minutes to go before captain Adam Keefe secured the win with 77 seconds to go.
