Ireland push Holland close

Ireland's men took a surprise lead against Holland only to eventually lose 2-1 in a close contest in the EuroHockey Championship.

Shane O'Donoghue's penalty corner put them ahead but Dutch set-piece specialist Mink van der Weerden equalised before half-time, with Rob Kempermann firing home a reverse-stick shot after the break.

Ireland's women fared better with a much-needed 3-2 win over Belarus to keep alive their semi-final hopes.

Alexandra Speers gave them a first-half lead and although they were pegged back just after the break, Speers restored Ireland's advantage and Lisa Jacob made it 3-1 to ensure a late Belarus goal did not affect the result.

"It was great to get the three points. We worked hard although we were a bit tentative at times, and if you take that approach against Belarus you end up in a bit of a scrap," said coach Darren Smith.
