Ireland's hopes of securing automatic Olympic qualification for the first time were cruelly dashed in a 4-3 shoot-out defeat by China at the World League Semi-Final in Valencia .

Having conceded an early goal Chloe Watkins deservedly equalised with 18 minutes to go and they were denied a winner when Megan Frazer's goal was disallowed after an umpire's video referral.

Ayeisha McFerran was put in goal for the shoot-out and made two saves but when Nicola Evans missed the chance to win on the last of the five regulation attempts, they lost out in the second round of sudden death.

Ireland's diminishing hopes of reaching Brazil next year rest with them finishing fifth and hoping results at other qualifying competitions later this year go their way.
