Northern Ireland's Jonathan Rea secured his sixth win of the season in the opening race at this weekend's World Superbike Championship round at Misano.

Huddersfield rider Tom Sykes failed to take advantage of his fifth consecutive pole position and had to settle for second place behind Kawasaki team-mate Rea, having won both races in the last round of the championship at Donington Park at the end of May.

However, Sykes pushed Rea hard as the Larne-born rider secured his first victory since Assen in mid-April, with Rea winning by 0.09 seconds. Rea now leads the overall championship standings on 318 points, a 61-point lead over Sykes.

Dutchman Michael van der Mark took third place on the podium having started the race 10th on the grid. He gained five places on the first lap alone.

Chaz Davies finished the race in fourth and is third in the riders' standings with 244 points.

The riders will go again in race two at 1200BST on Sunday.
