Kris Meeke closes in on victory in Rally de Espana
Northern Ireland's Kris Meeke leads after day two of the Rally de Espana following a dominant day of action in his Citroen C3 as he closes in on his second win of the season.
The 38-year-old, who triumphed at Mexico in March and placed third on Friday, moved to the top of the timesheets thanks to a victory on Saturday's opening stage seven and three further top-three finishes as t he switch from gravel to asphalt worked in his favour as he took a 13-second lead into the final day.
Overnight leader Andreas Mikkelsen (Hyundai i20) suffered problems on the penultimate stage of the day and endured broken steering as he was forced to retire as he finished 24th overall, while Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20) also hit problems and sits fifth.
Neuville's downfall strengthened nearest rival and World Rally Championship leader Sebastien Ogier's (Ford Fiesta) bid for a fifth world title and the Frenchman remains second with Estonian Ott Tanak hot on his heels - 1.5secs back - in third ahead of Sunday's final six stages.
