Sailing: Holywood girl to make a splash in Canada

This Tiffany is certainly not a one hit wonder

Wednesday, 6 June 2007

HOLYWOOD teenager, Tiffany Brien (right) has been selected by the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) as the only Ireland representative at the 2007 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships this summer in Canada.

Tiffany saw off fellow International competitor Annalise Murphy, also on the ISA Youth Academy, to be selected to represent her country in Kingston, Ontario from 12th - 21st July.

The selection process took place over 17 races in Ireland, where Tiffany came out as first girl, yet the criteria for selection required a top 40% International event finish in the International circuit in the spring of this year. Tiffany achieved an outstanding result in finishing 11th in Barcelona Olympic Week in March competing against the best in the world, which was more than enough to secure her Irish selection for the coveted Irish place at the ISAF Youth Worlds.

Tiffany will compete against over 200 young sailors from over 50 nations who will travel to Canada for the 37th Youth World Championships.

A member of the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club and the Ballyholme Yacht Club, Tiffany started sailing aged 10. As a crew Tiffany became the Girl World Champion in the Mirror Class with Catherine McQuitty in 2001. She quickly displayed a natural flair for sailing and with an impressive list of both domestic and international results she was awarded the coveted title of 'Northern Ireland Young Sailor of the Year' in 2006.

Tiffany comments: "I am delighted to be representing my country this summer in Canada. My goal is to come in the top 10 so I will be working hard on my training and fitness to compete with some of the best youth sailors in the world. I am really passionate about sailing so it is fantastic to travel to Canada to participate in such a high profile competition doing something I really enjoy."
