Mark Selby got the defence of his German Masters title under way with a comfortable 5-0 win over Steven Hallworth in Berlin on Wednesday.

Selby made a top break of 88 to ease through to the last 16 as he continues to chase his first title of the season.

He will next face Glasgow's Stephen Maguire who produced a consistent performance to see off Ken Doherty 5-1.

Maguire, who needs ranking points having slipped out of the world's top 16, said: "This is a ranking event so there is more pressure - it will be a tough match against Mark but I'm up for it."

Judd Trump produced breaks of 102 and 89 as he whitewashed Ali Carter 5-0, while Graeme Dott also made a century in a 5-0 win over Tian Pengfei of China.

Meanwhile there was a shock for last year's beaten finalist Shaun Murphy who crashed out at the first-round stage, losing 5-4 to Leicester's Ben Woollaston.
