Men's Hockey: Ulster make it a treble

A weekend training camp in Scotland turned out to be perfect preparation for the Ulster U16 boys' hockey squad ahead of their forthcoming Interprovincial Tournament.

A three game victory against top class opposition means the Ulster lads can look forward with confidence ahead of the Cork tournament in November.

The squad's first match was against the local district side in Largson the Friday evening.

A strong performance from the team resulted in a 4-2 victory with goals coming from Stephen Dowds, Joshua Moffett, William Edgar and Ross Blair.

On Saturday the squad had a training session in the morning followed by a match against Kelburne H.C. later in the afternoon.

Another excellent performance from the boys ensured a 6-2 victory against a much older side.

The goals in this game came from a Dowds hat-trick, one from Ian Sloan and two from Russell White.

The following day the boys faced the Western District side that fielded seven Scottish internationals.

After a poor start, conceding in the first 28 seconds, the boys responded well by putting four goals past the opposition keeper.

Dowds netted twice while the Edgar twins, John and William, scored one each.

The boys were on a high after this performance and naturally so after a very good weekend both on and off the pitch.

The coaches and manager described the trip as an "excellent weekend" and said the players were a credit to their schools, clubs and families.

Management said the squad has shown "tremendous team spirit" and said that if they keep working hard they can retain the Interprovincial title in Cork next month.

Next up, following a couple of training sessions, is a game against Pegasus H.C. on Sunday November 4.
