Donnelly leaps into Ulster battle

By Sammy Hamill

Eugene Donnelly has thrown his hat into the Todds Leap Ulster Rally ring and will be in the starting list next Friday afternoon.

A three-time winner of the event and the record-equalling five-times Tarmac champion, Donnelly has been missing from the premier Irish series since crashing out of the Circuit of Ireland but now returns for the Enniskillen-based event driving McKinstry Motorsport's S14 Subaru.

Donnelly has previous experience of the McKinstry Subaru, winning the May Day Rally at St Angelo airport where the Ulster Rally's spectator stage and service area will be sited next weekend.

Donnelly slots into the entry list at No.4 behind the Subarus of last year's Ulster winner Garry Jennings and current Tarmac championship leader Declan Boyle and the Ford Focus of Donagh Kelly. Josh Moffett heads up the production contenders at No.5 in his Mitsubishi.

The two-day event is also a round of the British championship but in a break from recent years, competitors like Daniel McKenna and Osian Pryce will not compete in a separate rally.

Instead, they will be part of the main international field, while Northern Ireland champion Derek McGarrity, having opted not to contest the main event, heads up the starting for the national rally his his WRC Mini.
