Josh Brookes to show off new Superbike at Cookstown

By Paul Lindsay

British Superbike star Josh Brookes, who set the fastest ever time for a newcomer around the Isle of Man TT — with a lap of 127.726mph last June — will debut his Milwaukee Yamaha Superbike between the hedges at the KDM Hire Cookstown 100 on April 26.

Fans may not get to see the former World Supersport race winner and multiple BSB victor go head-to-head with Michael Dunlop on the Buildbase BMW at Orritor in the Open race, but they will see the talented 30-year-old Aussie lap the circuit on his Milwaukee Yamaha for the first time this season.

It’s a major coup for the Cookstown 100 to have secured the services of Brookes and his Milwaukee Yamaha team and proves just how much the New South Wales man enjoys his Northern Ireland lifestyle, as he helps his adopted countrymen promote the opening national road race of the season in County Tyrone.

Speaking from his base just outside Newtownards, Brookes explained his love for the local culture and people: “I may be in an English-based team this season in Milwaukee Yamaha, but I still reside in Northern Ireland during the racing season as I really enjoy the laid-back lifestyle,” he said.

Brookes has sampled the Cookstown 100 atmosphere in the past when riding for Tyco Suzuki, but only from the sidelines. So he’s pumped to now be getting a racing perspective of the circuit on race day aboard his Milwaukee Yamaha.

“I’m really looking forward to getting a chance to ride the circuit, even though I will not be racing. It’ll be nice to give a wave or two to my local supporters and let them see me in my new Milwaukee leathers and bike before the North West 200,” he said.

Pre-planning his Cookstown welcome, Brookes said with a glint in his eye: “Hopefully the fans that don’t get to see us in British Superbike will come and say hello on the day, and I may even do the odd wheelie or two!”

Brookes will be based in the main upper paddock at Orritor — alongside the likes of MD Racing and Tyco Suzuki — to meet and greet fans along with his team’s title sponsor Milwaukee Power Tools.

Fans will also get the chance to win a VIP Hospitality experience for two people at the Vauxhall International North West 200 in May, courtesy of Milwaukee Yamaha — with all proceeds going to Northern Ireland Chest, Heart & Stroke.

Next Monday night, the Aussie will also be making an appearance at the Coleraine & District Motor Club’s ‘Meet the Stars’ event at the Titanic Suite in Belfast to promote the NW200 which culminates on May 17.

Following the official press launch on Monday morning, race fans will get the chance to meet some of the event’s top star, including Michael Dunlop, John McGuinness, Stuart Easton, Alastair Seeley, Ian Hutchinson, William Dunlop, Jeremy McWilliams, Ryan Farquhar and, of course, Brookes.

A chat show will be hosted on the night by BBC Sport NI’s Stephen Watson after which those fans lucky enough to have obtained a ticket will get the chance to meet their favourite riders for photographs and autographs.
