Kenny McKinstry fought off a late charge by Kevin Lynch to win the Shackleton Motorsport Festival Rally.

The charity event was staged by the Maiden City Club at the huge former military base at Ballykelly with three-times Northern Ireland champion Lynch as the main sponsor through his KPL Utilities company.

But McKinstry stole his thunder by snatching victory in his S8 Subaru as Lynch paid the price for a couple of early spins which dropped him to third place.

He narrowed the gap to two seconds and then set fastest time in his S12B Subaru on the final stage but former Tarmac champion McKinstry refused to be beaten, all but matching Lynch on the last stage to take the win by one second.

Another ex-NI champion Denis Biggerstaff was third in his S9 Subaru ahead of the Skoda Octavia of Richard Hogg.

And making it a great day out for the McKinstry family, Kenny’s daughter Emma was fifth in her Subaru.

Meanwhile, Eamonn Mimnagh came from behind to win the Enniskillen Club's new Brougher Mountain rally time trial. The early leader had been Garry Jennings but Mimnagh finished strongly to claim victory.
