Laverty stretches wings with Swan Yamaha run-out
Michael Laverty made a positive start with his new Swan Yamaha British Superbike team during a four-day pre-season shakedown at Cartagena in southern Spain.
Fellow Ulsterman Alastair Seeley unveiled his all-new Relentless Suzuki GSX-R600 — the very bike he will campaign on in this season’s British Supersport Championship — and he was joined by team-mates Guy Martin and new Australian BSB recruit Josh Brookes.
Scottish rider Stuart Easton was also present on his Paul Bird Motorsport-prepared ZX-10 Kawasaki, run under the MSS Kawasaki banner, with HM Plant Honda duo Shane Byrne and current BSB champion Ryuichi Kiyonari appearing for the final two days.
There was no official timing over the four days, with the teams left to provide lap time information. But it was Tommy Hill, Shane Byrne, John Hopkins and Laverty who were suggested as the most rapid on track at the end of day three.
Seeley was certainly the quickest of the Supersport men; in fact reports suggest the Carrickfergus rider was giving many of the British Superbike riders a run for their money on his 600 Suzuki.
“I’m really enjoying myself,” explained Seeley from his Cartagena base last night.
“The wee 600 is just getting better and better. I’ve shocked even myself with the lap times we are posting on our first outing — it just feels so planted. I’ll be leaving here very happy indeed.”
For those not out in Spain, Bishopscourt in Co Down was the venue of choice on Saturday, where former British Juniorstock champion Jamie Hamilton saw action on a new ZX-10 Kawasaki which he will ride in this season’s Irish Superbike Championship.
