Martin Donnelly Trophy: Noel Robinson out to keep hold of his crown at Kirkistown

Past winners Noel Robinson and Ivor McCullough will go head to head at Kirkistown tomorrow in the Martin Donnelly Trophy meeting for Formula Ford 1600.

Robinson, who won last year and McCullough who topped the results the first time the event was held back in 2006, will face a selection of Ireland’s top Formula Ford stars including reigning Northern Ireland Champion John Ferguson, teenager Scott McGarrity and Dubliner Neville Smyth among many others in the contest which will be played out over two qualifying heats and a 20 minute final with prizes worth almost £2,000 going to the victor.

Portadown man Robinson, whose dramatic charge to victory last year from 21st place on the starting grid was one of the highlights of the season, believes that it will be even tougher to win this time round.

“Although the numbers have dropped slightly there’s more quality in the field than ever,” he says. “ The pace at the front is very tight.”

The first heats are scheduled to start at 11.30 tomorrow morning, following official qualifying.
