Moffett in the driving seat for Midland Rally success

By Sammy Hamill

Sam Moffett continues his frenetic start to the year with his fourth event in little more than as many weeks when he heads the line-up for the second round of the Triton Showers Irish national championship, the Longford-based Midland Rally on Sunday.

Moffett won the opening round of the series in Nenagh a fortnight ago as well as finishing third on the Galway International and second behind his brother Josh in the Carrick-on-Suir forest rally.

Last weekend he was on course for another top three finish in the Tarmac championship's West Cork Rally until a late puncture dropped his R5 Ford Fiesta down to fourth.

On Sunday, Moffett switches back to his Nenagh-winning WRC Fiesta to take on former national champions Declan Boyle and Donagh Kelly, who chalked up a record fourth successive win in West Cork last weekend, as well reigning champion Roy White in their WRC Fords.

Joining the line up for the first time is Manus Kelly, who scored a stunning first international win in Donegal in what was just his second appearance in a WRC Subaru.

Kelly's back in the Subaru again and, having won in Carlow last year, he could be on course for an unlikely hat-trick.

The top 10 also includes Mark Donnelly in his WRC Fiesta and the Subaru of former multi-champion Niall Maguire.

Moffett currently leads the eight round national series ahead of Boyle and Kelly.
