Rally NI: Breen boosted as he takes step to stardom

by Sammy Hamill

Craig Breen will arrive for this weekend’s Toddsleap.com Rally NI buoyed up by his selection for the World final of the Pirelli Star Driver series.

The 20-year-old from Waterford was chosen following the northern European shoot-out which took place during the Snappane Rally in Sweden on Saturday and he goes forward to the global final of a competition which offers a fully-funded programme of World championship rallies next season.

Breen’s Super 2000 M-Sport Ford Focus was today flown back from Sweden to be prepared for the Northern Ireland round of the British and Irish Tarmac championships which starts in Antrim on Friday.

Breen was the Motorsport Ireland nominee for the European final where he was up against UK representative Dave Weston, one of his main rivals this weekend.

l HARRY Cathcart, one of the enduring stalwarts of Irish rallying, has died.

He was a long-time member of Enniskillen Motor Club and a regular class winner in all of Ireland’s major rallies.

Ex-Army Sergeant Major Harry’s favourite event was the Manx International Rally where he competed for more than three decades, winning his class on more occasions than not.

Harry, who was buried yesterday after a service in Ballinamallard, is survived by his wife Frances and daughter Mavis.
