Colin Turkington lost ground in his bid to defend his British Touring Car title after brake trouble and a difficult trio of races at Oulton Park three weeks ago, slipping to fifth in the standings, 33 points behind the new leader, his BMR Volkswagen team-mate Jason Plato.

With the series taking its summer break after this weekend's rounds at Croft, Turkington is keen to head off on holiday on the back of a strong performance.

And he has reason to be optimistic. In the past six races at the north Yorkshire circuit, he has won four times.

But those victories came onboard BMWs and now the Portadown driver faces the new challenge of carrying on winning in a front-wheel-drive Volkswagen CC.

"They are two very different cars but my job is to extract as much performance from the VW as possible although Croft has been known as a rear-wheel-drive track," he said.

Qualifying takes place this afternoon with all three races live on ITV4 tomorrow.
