Crutchlow's victory adds to joy of family's celebrations

By Paul Lindsay

Toome's Eugene Laverty took 14th place during yesterday's Australian MotoGP round at Phillip Island, on a day when Coventry's Cal Crutchlow took his second MotoGP win of the season for LCR Honda.

A victorious Crutchlow said afterwards: "I set a few targets this season and one was to win here this year, so I'm delighted."

This adds to the Irwin family's weekend celebrations, as Crutchlow's wife Lucy is a cousin of both Glenn and Andrew Irwin, who took five wins between them on Saturday at the Sunflower Trophy.

Pre-race favourite Marc Marquez, who was crowned MotoGP world champion just a week ago, slid out in the early stages, with Valentino Rossi making a remarkable charge to second place from 15th on the grid. Suzuki's Maverick Viñales took third place.

Eugene Laverty said afterwards: "It was really a tough race. From early on I knew I was having some difficulty.

"I did what I could, but it was probably our most difficult race of the season."
