North West 200: Rider airlifted to hospital after practice session

A rider has been airlifted to hospital after an accident at a North West 200 practice session.

The competitor's name has not been released but it organisers have sad his injuries are not life-threatening.

Thursday Superbike practice session was halted as a result of the crash.

The BBC reports that this was the rider's first time competing at the North West 200.

A campaign to get an air ambulance for Northern Ireland is the official charity at the famous north coast race this year.

The campaign was spear-headed by the late Dr John Hinds.

He was known as one of the flying doctors of Irish road racing but was fatally injured last July as he provided medical cover at a Skerries 100 practice session in Co Dublin.
