Rea stays top of world with Italian double
Defending champion Jonathan Rea shouted his delight as he extended his lead at the top of the World Superbike Championship with a double win at Misano in Italy.
The Ballyclare speed king won race one on Saturday and followed up with victory over Kawasaki team-mate Tom Sykes once again yesterday to stretch his advantage at the top of the standings to 66 points.
Rea tailed Sykes, who took the lead with an ambitious move at turn two on the first lap, for most of the race before pulling away with five laps remaining to eventually win by 2.96 seconds, a more comfortable cushion than the 0.09 secs he won race one by.
"I'm so happy to have made it a double win here. I learned some things from the race that I didn't see on Saturday and I was able to apply that at the end of the race," Rea said afterwards.
