A NEW co-driver for Eugene Donnelly? Trouble is, there would probably be a
fight for the wheel of the rally car - and David Coulthard might not be too
good at calling pacenotes.
But the Red Bull Formula One driver was the guest of Irish Tarmac rally
champion Donnelly and the Reid Motorsport team in Donegal at the weekend.
He was there to advise the new Reid team on all aspects of team building as
well as diet, training and the mental approach to competitive driving ahead
of the Shell Donegal International Rally which takes place the weekend after
next.
He also had the opportunity to try out Donnelly's potent S12 Subaru Impreza.
"David is still at the very pinnacle of motorsport in Formula One so he
was very interesting guy to meet," said Donnelly, a two-time Donegal
International winner.
"Although F1 is very different to rallying I was interested in his
observations on my driving style!
"But racing and tarmac rallying are not so different and he pointed out
various things to try and keep the driving as smooth as possible. Also his
knowledge of working in a team, and improving team co-ordination, was very
useful for us."
Coulthard also met the organisers of the Donegal International which this
year sees the capacity line-up headed by reigning World champion Sebastien
Loeb.
