Turk in for points
Saturday, 23 June 2007
Colin Turkington hasn't given up on the British Tour Car title as the series reaches it halfway point this weekend but he has put it out of his mind.
"I'm just going to go all out for race wins and let the points tale care of themselves," says the Portadown driver ahead of the BTCC series at Oulton Park in Cheshire.
Turkington, who challenged champion Matt Neal for the title all the way through last year's championship, is fifth and more than 60 points adrift of current leader Jason Plato after a difficult start to the season following Team RAC's decision to switch from MG to BMW.
But after his first victory in the 320 SE in the previous round at Croft he feels they now have a good enough understanding of the car that they can contend for wins every weekend.
"I'm not in such a tricky position as Jason or Fabrizio (Giovanardi) will probably end up being, thinking about the championship and keeping out of tight situations," said Turkington. "I'm just going all out for wins."
"The win at Croft was satisfying," he said. "We've had to learn about the BMW from scratch and I've had to learn about rear-wheel drive, and suddenly we've cracked it."
Turkington also feels that he can now take advantage of the benefits of a rear-wheel drive car, such as better tyre wear and its strength at the starts of races.
"We have a quick car in qualifying and race trim, and we're quick at the end of a race which is an advantage," he said.
