British Superbikes: Only a win will do it for Michael
Saturday, 14 May 2011
Swan Yamaha's Michael Laverty is disappointed with his topsy-turvy start to the 2011 British Superbike campaign.
And that's why he will be looking for two faultless performances tomorrow at Croft in North Yorkshire - the same venue where he won just 12 months ago with former team Relentless Suzuki.
The Toomebridge rider, now based in Presteign, Wales, has looked strong and comfortable with his new team on the factory-supported R1 Yamaha.
But two unforced errors at Oulton Park during round two, and a huge crash whilst leading the opening race of the season at Brands, has left him at the bottom end of the top six.
He is currently 35 points behind championship leader Shane Byrne (HM Plant Honda).
Laverty said: "I'm looking forward to Croft as last season it was the circuit where I had my best race of the year.
"It's good to be back out again so quickly after Oulton, as I haven't finished on the podium this season yet and feel I need to put that right, especially after running so strong in all four races so far."
He added: "It is the Swan Yamaha team's home round at Croft so it would be nice to get the first win of the season there.
"We know we are capable of winning, so I won't be looking for anything less than that this weekend."
Laverty's team-mate and pre-season championship favourite, Tommy Hill, aims to be back in action tomorrow after missing Oulton Park, where he injured his shoulder during morning warm-up on race day.
Hill said: "I have had laser treatment, magnotherapy and visited an oxygen chamber to basically do as much as I can to get out at Croft.
"I have been resting up and I have some more treatment planned before the weekend, so we will have to see.
"I just need to concentrate on getting out there and scoring as many points as I can for the championship."
Local men Ian Lowry and John Laverty will also be looking for a big change of fortune at Croft.
The Buildbase duo have had a nightmare so far on the German BMW machinery, with Laverty losing the tip of his ring finger on the opening weekend.
Former top six regular, Lowry, failed to score a solitary point in the opening four races.
It's a well known fact that Lowry's Superbike was running a standard motor and gearbox at Brands.
And despite a World Superbike technician with him at Oulton, Lowry's team still struggled to give him the necessary tools to be up where he belongs - in the top 10.
In the Supersport class, Carrick's Alastair Seeley will continue his battle with Dublin's Jack Kennnedy (Appleyard Macadam Yamaha) and championship leader Ben Wilson at Croft.
Seeley is currently developing Suzuki's all-new GSX-R600, riding in Relentless by TAS livery.
But the diminutive Co Antrim man will ride at Croft with next week's North West 200 firmly in mind.
"We had a great test at Kirkistown on Tuesday in less than perfect conditions," explained Seeley.
"But I'm delighted with the progress we have made on all three machines prior to the North West.
"I took almost 1.5 seconds off Cameron Donald's Superbike lap record with ease,.
"I also dipped inside the Superstock lap record as well as doing a few fast laps on my GSX-R600 - the bike I ride in British Supersport.
"I'm looking forward to hopefully closing the gap on Ben Wilson at Croft, then it's straight to Portrush."
In the Superstock 600cc class, another Carrick man, Glenn Irwin, will be looking for better luck after getting wiped out at Oulton whilst challenging for the lead on his MWR Kawasaki.
And it will be interesting to see if Clogher's Keith Farmer, a surprise winner at Oulton, can again be in the hunt at the North Yorkshire venue.
