It’s take two for Turkington

Monday, 15 June 2009

Colin Turkington swept to the top of the British Touring Car Championship standings with another pair of victories at Croft.

In what was a virtually flawless weekend for the Ulsterman, he turned a two-point deficit into a 25 point lead as the series takes its mid-season break.

Coming off a double win at Oulton Park a fortnight ago, Turkington dominated again.

He claimed pole position on Saturday in his Team RAC BMW and going on to win the first two races in dominant style to take his tally for the season to five victories.

In race one he led from start to finish, out-dragging the Chevrolet Lacetti of former champion Jason Plato off the line and moving into an immediate lead.

Plato finished a distant third but more importantly for Turkington, the Vauxhalls of his closest rivals for the BTCC title, Matt Neal and Fabrizio Giovanardi, were sixth and fifth respectively.

Race two was a repeat performance, Turkington leading throughout, Plato picking up third while Giovanardi and Neal were again fifth and sixth, allowing Turkington to open up a 24 point lead.

Race three brought a totally different scenario for not only did the ‘reverse grid’ rule see the 27-year-old from Portadown have to start from 10th place, but the warm sunshine turned to torrential rain. There were accidents galore on the flooded track and much of the race was run behind the safety car.

Reigning champion Giovanardi made the most of the conditions to take what was just his second win of the season with Turkington coming home in sixth place, crucially beating Neal to establish an impressive 25-point lead.
