Graeme McDowell has followed in Rory McIlroy's footsteps and ruled himself out of the Rio Olympics.

Rory announced on Wednesday that he would withdraw from the team because of the Zika virus and according to McDowell, he was next in line for a spot on the team.

But the former US Open winner published a statement on Thursday to say that as his wife Kirsten is pregnant with their second child he had already made the decision that he would not travel outside the US, where the family lives.

The Portrush-born golfer added: "Unfortunately I will therefore not be available to replace Rory on the team. I have informed Paul McGinley and the Olympic Council of Ireland of my decision."
