Matt McGovern and Ryan Seaton are blown off course

Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern’s hopes of picking up a sailing medal for Ireland took a blow when they could only finish ninth and 11th in their two races on day four of the 49er competition.

Having begun Race 7 in 16th place, they quickly moved through the ranks, but missed out on a place in the top 10 by just nine seconds, coming home 11th in the 20-boat field.

Seaton and McGovern were actually more than a minute down in Race 8 — although the pace of the race itself was slower than the previous one — but still moved up the standings, finishing ninth.

The Ulster pair (pictured) remain in ninth position overall on 61 points, with three of the remaining seven races taking place today before a rest day on Saturday.

“Ryan and Matt have been sailing flat out for four days and they’ve remained within the top 10 every day,” said Irish Sailing Association Performance Director James O’Callaghan.

“They’re sailing really well and are intent on keeping it that way.”

Australians, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, lead on 24 points followed by the British boat of Steve Morrison and Ben Rhodes (35).

Meanwhile, Annalise Murphy will return to her Laser challenge today as the leader.
