Rio Olympics: Eugene Magee and Mitch Darling give hockey champions Germany a real scare

By Graham Hamilton

Two wonder goals, from Eugene Magee and Mitch Darling, highlighted Ireland's best display in Rio to date ... but not unexpectedly they went down 3-2 to a Germany side still on track for a third gold medal in a row.

That's three of the world's top five the Irish have faced but two wins in their final games could still see them make the quarter-finals, starting with Canada tomorrow (3pm our time).

The Irish should have been ahead before Moritz Furste powered a penalty corner to the net.

It needed keeper Harte to keep the score down but then Ulsterman Magee crashed home a memorable goal on the backhand stick.

Furste, though, converted another penalty corner and Zwicker made it 3-1 but Darling's shot on the reverse cut the deficit in the final minute.

Meanwhile Great Britain's men picked up their first win of the Games last night, hammering hosts Brazil 9-1.

Ulsterman Mark Gleghorne was among the scorers for Team GB, who keep their chances of progressing to the knock-out stages alive.

Their final pool game is tomorrow night against Australia (12:30am our time).

  • Tomorrow: Pool A: Great Britain v Australia (12.30am). Pool B: Ireland v Canada (3pm)
