Allen kicks off snooker season

Wednesday, 9 September 2009

Mark Allen takes what he hopes will be the first step towards this season’s World title when he faces Matthew Stevens in the Shanghai Masters in China today.

The £300,000 event is the first major tournament of a season which sees the Antrim cueman at number 11 in the World rankings and with aspirations to get right to the top of the pile.

Belfast’s Joe Swail is also in last 32 action today, tackling former World champion Mark Williams.

World number one Ronnie O’Sullivan is up against Scotland’s Graeme Dott.

Those already through to the last 16 include World champion John Higgins, who beat Matthew Selt 5-2 yesterday, and Stephen Hendry, who came from 4-0 down to defeat Marcus Campbell 5-4.

Dublin’s Ken Doherty is also through after a surprise 5-4 win against Neil Robertson.

It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
