Rowing: Campbell in a Henley double win
Monday, July 09, 2007
Alan Campbell has won his second rowing event at Henley Regatta.
Rowing for The Tideway Scullers, he beat World Champion Mahe Drysdale from
New Zealand.
The Coleranie man steamed off the start striking a rate of 41, a blistering
pace for a sculler, against Drysdale's 38 and slowly moved into a
half-length lead at the quarter-mile signal.
At the Barrier, reached in 2.20 Campbell was three-quarters of a length in
front.
Campbell was warned for his steering and sensing an opportunity to come
back, Drysdale sharply increased his rate.
But Campbell was equal to the task, responding to maintain his advantage and
indeed increased his lead to win by a length and a quarter.
Arguably this was the greatest ever final at Henley with two of the best
scullers in the world putting on a epic performance with the ex-Coleraine
Inst rower beating the double world champion in Tideway Sculler's 50th
anniversary.
