Cricket: Wilson and Kidd named for India academy
Tuesday, 4 December 2007
Two Ulster players are among four Irish internationals who will attend next year's ICC European Academy - in India.
Gary Wilson and Gary Kidd have been selected for the 10-day camp, starting
on February 24, and they will be joined in the 14-member squad by Rush
wicket-keeper batsman Fintan McAllister and Clontarf and Middlesex graduate
Andrew Poynter. All four played in the last Under-19 World Cup finals.
Ireland are the only Associate country to have four of their nominees
accepted.
Scotland and the Netherlands have three each, Guernsey
two, while Gibraltar and, for the first time, Israel are the other countries
who will be represented.
And there will be a familiar face among
the coaches in Mumbai.
Adrian Birrell, the mentor who took the
Ireland squad to this year's World Cup finals, before stepping down, will be
one of the coaching staff, led by ICC regional development officer Philip
Hudson.
Previous European Academies have taken place at
Loughborough College and La Manga, but this year the decision was taken to
further the players' education with the move to the sub-continent for the
2008 event.
"Holding the academy on the sub-continent will
allow all players the opportunity to develop their game on different
surfaces and in different conditions to what they have become accustomed to,"
said Hudson.
"All of these young cricketers have the potential
to play for their national teams in the near future and with many of our
Associate and Affiliate sides participating more frequently on the
international stage, it is essential that they learn to play on different
types of surfaces."
The academy will take place from February
24-March 5 and the programme will consist of five days of practice and three
matches against a variety of opposition including an under-19 state side.
There will be one two-day and two one-day matches.
None of Ireland's
current crop of under-19 players could be considered as the Academy takes
place at the same time as the World Cup finals in Kuala Lumpur.
All
14 are aged between 18 and 22, with Wilson, the former Civil Service North
player, now a full-time professional with Surrey, the most experienced
having played 14 games for Ireland.
Waringstown's Kidd also played
three one-day internationals for Ireland during last summer.
