Barry McGuigan tips new signing Frampton for top

Thursday, 28 May 2009

Barry McGuigan believes he can take exciting prospect Carl Frampton all the way to World title glory.

McGuigan unveiled Belfast man Frampton as his second signing since his decision to start managing and promoting and the former world champion has no doubt he has a gem to work with.

Indeed, McGuigan could no doubt see something of himself in the 22-year-old as Frampton has a strong engine and throws a mean body shot.

McGuigan said: "I'm hugely excited about this young man. He's the best young prospect we've had in decades. I really think we're talking about Johnny Caldwell, Freddie Gilroy, Dave Boy McAuley, Bernard Dunne, fighters of that ilk. He can go the whole way.

"He can adapt to the pro game very easily. I'm thrilled to be part of him. Boxing's on a high here at the moment. It's a real renaissance and I believe this guy will add to it and he'll be a world champion."

McGuigan admitted that he was aware that many fighters from here have struggled to build a fan base due to fighting away from home but is adamant that Frampton will not suffer the same fate.

McGuigan said: "I want to get him as many fights in England as possible and as many fights here as possible.

“The objective would be to have his main fights here because I believe it is here where he is going to be a star."

Frampton's professional journey will start on June 12 in Liverpool and while he showed nerves in the spotlight of yesterday's media, he is relishing his debut.

"I'm looking forward to that. Since I was a kid I wanted to be a professional boxer and now I have the chance," said Frampton.
