Jamie Conlan lined up for British title eliminator

Tuesday, 14 December 2010

Jamie Conlan enters the King’s Hall tomorrow night knowing victory may well lead to a crunch clash with former British title challenger Ashley Sexton.

In May, unbeaten Sexton drew with Shinny Bayaar, who defends his British flyweight title against Paul Edwards tomorrow night in the main supporting fight to Martin Lindsay’s clash with John Simpson.

Conlan meets Francis Croes after his original unbeaten opponent Lewis Browning was forced to pull out through injury and victory is now expected to lead to a showdown with Sexton on February 5, in what will be an eliminator for the right to challenge Bayaar — assuming he comes through against Edwards.

Conlan’s manager and coach John Breen is expected to agree a promotional deal with tomorrow night’s promoter Frank Maloney as he seeks to push his hot Belfast prospect towards major title success.

Breen said: “There’s talk about the fight with Sexton, but Jamie just has to focus on doing a good job on Wednesday night.

“He’s already made a big impression after only four fights and I know that next year he will be ready to go and win the British title.”

There has been continued talk about an Irish flyweight title clash with fellow Belfast man Luke Wilton and Breen believes the duel will happen, sooner or later.

“We have said that we’ll take the fight for the Irish title, but if Jamie can push on to get a British title shot we would grab it,” said Breen.

“Both boys just have to keep winning and then I’m sure it will happen.”

Tomorrow night east Belfast man Wilton has a re-match with Usman Ahmed, who outpointed him two years ago.
