Lisburn boxer Scott targets Peret for KO

Thursday, 17 July 2008

Scott Belshaw's desire for revenge is such that you almost feel you should have sympathy for Daniel Peret.

Tomorrow night the 6ft 7’ Lisburn heavyweight seeks to set the record straight against the man who has inflicted the solitary defeat of his career and he'll do it with a new head coach in his corner.

Belshaw is now basing himself in London and Brian Lawrence will be giving the instructions in the corner with co-manager, Belfast man Alan Wilton, happy to now be assisting.

Belshaw is adamant that he is being transformed as a fighter, enjoying top sparring in London with the likes of John McDermott who tops the bill in Dagenham when he challenges Danny Williams for the British heavyweight title.

The 23-year-old — whose last outing was an easy May victory over Edgar Kalnars in Belfast — lost to Peret in March but says he is ready to erase that defeat from his memory.

"It's really a case of unfinished business. I have to take care of this guy and get that defeat out of my head," said Belshaw, who has admitted that he has never been in better condition.

"I know now that I have to spend most of my life in London because it's here that I can get the top sparring I need and because I'm here that's why Brian Lawrence is coaching me.

"I was a bit naïve thinking that I didn't need to have as much sparring, probably because I was banging everybody out, but now I know otherwise.

"I know that I can't cut any corners and I have to give it everything and that means being in London. I'm determined to go to the top and I have to make sacrifices."

Belshaw says that when he met Peret in March his mind simply wasn't on the job as he had just lost his best friend in an attack outside a pub.

"The week leading up to that fight I had hardly been the near the gym because most of the time I was with his family," added Belshaw.

"I probably shouldn't have boxed but I didn't want to let anyone down.

“I was so disappointed with the defeat and going into this fight with him I'm totally focused.

"I'm going in to box and just let the power come. Before I was always looking to blast people out but I need to develop my boxing and show that I have more than just power.

“Once I get this out of the way then I hope to stay busy and push on towards a British title shot next year some time.

“Looking back that defeat was probably a blessing in disguise.

“Now I have to show everyone that I am learning and that I have a big future in the sport.”

Good luck Scott, revenge is sweet. Then maybe next, an Irish title fight against prizefighter winner big Rogie[Martin Rogan].

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
