Belfast's Tommy McCarthy is one victory away from claiming at least a bronze medal at the World Youth championships in Mexico.

At the Lopez Mateo's Gymnasium in Guadalajara, McCarthy started his bid for glory with an emphatic victory.

McCarthy, from the Oliver Plunkett club, stopped the Lithuanian Ovidijus Martinkenas in the third round and will now meet Pezhman Seifkhami of Sweden in the quarter-finals.

The 18-year-old dropped Martinkenas with some solid body and head shots in the third and the contest was stopped after 1:17 with McCarthy 11-1 ahead.

McCarthy, one of the best Irish prospects around, now has a great chance of sealing a medal.

The victory came on the back of friend and featherweight clubmate Tyrone McKenna unfortunately exiting the tournament at the hands of American Kelvin Rivers, 16-5.

Belfast flyweight Ruairi Dalton also went out, losing 10-8 to Argentina’s Alberto Melian.

Dublin light-welterweight Jamie Kavanagh enjoyed a stunning third round stoppage of Spain's Placeres Doramas and now meets Italy's Francesco Nespro in the last 16.

Donegal bantamweight bantamweight Tyrone McCullagh is through to the last 16 as well and will meet Dmitrus Gutmans of Latvia.

McCullagh enjoyed the victory of his career when overcoming Ukrainian, Shokhruth Khudjabekov 11-8.

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
