Brian Magee is right back on course for another World title fight before the end of the year.

Big ambitions: Brian Magee’s victory over Jaime Barboza on Saturday has put him in the frame for a World title shout

The 36-year-old southpaw enjoyed one of the best wins of his career when he comprehensively out-pointed Jaime Barboza in the main event of the WBA’s “KO to Drugs” Festival at the National Gymnasium in San Jose, Costa Rica on Saturday night.

Former European champion Magee picked up the WBA interim super-middleweight title which essentially means he will be the mandatory challenger for the WBA title.

Bizarrely the WBA have two titles at super-middleweight, the main belt is vacant while they also have Andre Ward as the WBA Super champion and his next fight is with Carl Froch in the final of the highly lucrative Super Six tournament.

Belfast man Magee will now have his sights on the winner of the vacant WBA title clash between Hungary's former WBO champion Karoly Balzsay and Ukrainian Stansyslav Kastanov on August 26.

Magee knows that he would have a very good chance of taking the World title off either man and manager Pat Magee would be hopeful that Matchroom Sports would be able to bid enough money to bring the fight to Belfast before Christmas.

The impressive victory over Barboza, 118-110 117-11 116-112, has also opened up further options for Magee who lost in an IBF title fight earlier this year to Romanian Lucien Bute.

The winner of the Froch-Ward clash on October 29 in Atlantic City would also be a possibility for the west Belfast man down the line and a revenge fight with Froch is something he would savour, having been stopped by the Nottingham man in the 10th round five years ago.

Magee, who clinically out-boxed Costa Rican Barboza from the first bell to the last on Saturday night, is adamant that he can still realise his dream and get his hands on a world title.

“You have to have the belief or else you shouldn't be in boxing,” said Magee.

“I know that I can still win a world title.

I'm still improving and even though I lost to Bute I took a lot out of that fight, I learned a lot.”

Meanwhile, British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Tyson has made it clear that he wants his first defence in Belfast with the Irish title also on the line.

“I don't care who I have to box, whether it's Martin Rogan, Coleman Barrett or Colin Kenna I want the Irish title next and then I can think about the European title,” said Fury.
