Duddy’s set for a quick return to ring
Monday, 23 February 2009
John Duddy will return to the ring on April 24, following his points victory on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.
Duddy's advisor and the man now directing his career, Craig Hamilton, revealed that the unbeaten Ulsterman will have another ten rounder at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey.
On Saturday night, unbeaten Duddy gave a clinical boxing display as he kept American Matte Vanda at bay up until the tenth round when he was then momentarily rocked by a quick flurry.
Hamilton is determined to keep his fighter active as he plots a course to a world title shot this year and he believes that Duddy is now only "two or three fights away" from challenging for either a world middleweight or light-middleweight title.
The weight issue seems to be the only concern for Team Duddy as Hamilton and coach Pat Burns were delighted with the way he handled Vanda, refusing to be drawn into a bloody battle as in the past.
Hamilton said: "John boxed exactly the way he was told to and the way Pat (Burns) has been working with him in the gym.
“Now we want to keep him busy because when a fighter is busy he is repeating and repeating everything he learns in the gym and that brings him on a lot quicker.
"John will have three weeks off and then he'll be back in the gym preparing for April 24 where he will top the bill for Main Events who are promoting the card.
"Certainly before the end of the year I would like to see John fighting for a world title. Whether it's at light-middle or middle, we'll have to take a lot of things into consideration. We have to make sure that John at 29 is comfortable at making the weight and also there are financial considerations.
"Having spoken to Bob Arum we know that there is a natural fight with Kelly Pavlik for the world middleweight title but at light-middleweight there's the possibility of a big fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr, and there are others."
Hamilton is also hoping that the legal wrangle with the McLoughlin brothers over the promotional rights to Duddy are resolved as quickly as possible.
"I would hope they are sorted out very soon but you just never know with cases like this. What I do know is that the Federal court do not like issues like this involving a professional athlete to drag on," he added.

Good to see Duddy using his jab and defense against Vanda. He could have a rematch with Campas or Smichet and clearly beat them or bring in Matt Macklin and shut his mouth.
