Ryan Harrison completed a perfect week as he made it three out of three Irish records at the World Championships in Rome yesterday.

The Londonderry man, based at University of Tennessee, has been inspired this week and having set 400m and 200m records he then took Barry Murphy's 100m time in yesterday's heats.

Dubliner Murphy clocked 49.76 to set a new Irish best, beating his time of 49.98 set on Sunday and then in the following heat 20-year-old Harrison came home in 49.49.

“I've had a great championships. My confidence has just gone up and up and I can see what I'm capable of. I've had one year at Tennesse and already I'm seeing a massive improvement,” said Harrison.

The records continued for 16-year-old Grainne Murphy as she went 2:13.66 in the 200m butterfly, a new Irish junior record. This morning Andrew Bree goes in his main event, the 200m breaststroke and he should make the semi-finals this evening.

Last night Michael Phelps bounced back from defeat in the 200m free to win the 200m butterfly in a new world record time of 51.51. Pawel Korzeniowski and Takeshi Matsuda finished second and third with Britain's Michael Rock in seventh.

Italy's Federica Pellegrini clocked 1.52.98 to set another world record to win gold as Jo Jackson finished fourth in the 200m freestyle.

It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
