Ashes hero Jonathan Trott will replace Andrew Flintoff in the England squad for Thursday’s one-day international against Ireland at Stormont.

Flintoff, who played his last Test match at The Oval, will undergo exploratory surgery on his injured right knee tomorrow and was yesterday withdrawn not only from this week’s game in Belfast but also the two T20 internationals against Australia and the seven-match one-day series.

Trott, brilliantly run out by Simon Katich in the first innings for 41, then scored 119 in the second innings in his first Test match. He might not have the star quality of Flintoff but, if selected against William Porterfield’s side, he will be determined on his ODI debut and probably harder to dislodge.

There is expected to be a last minute rush for tickets in the aftermath of England’s victory for the glamour Belfast game which will also be former captain Trent Johnston’s 100th game for Ireland.

After playing his 99th on Saturday in the emphatic 96 runs success over Scotland in Aberdeen, he has to wait to bring up his landmark following the postponement of yesterday’s second ODI against the Scots.

Light drizzle throughout the night and most of the morning virtually ended any prospects of play and the game was called off just after lunch. Ireland were certainly the more anxious to get onto the field to assert their dominance over their nearest Associate rivals.

The outclassed hosts were set a target of 205 and Ireland bowled them out for 109 with a high class bowling display.

Trent Johnston, Alex Cusack, Andre Botha and Kevin O’Brien did not concede a single boundary in their 18 overs and Regan West, Kyle McCallan and Andrew White then shared six wickets.

In the Scotland innings, which lasted 40 overs, there were only two fours and a six. The batting was again led from the front by in-form skipper William Porterfield who scored his third half century of the week and Botha chipped in with 33.
