Ladies hockey: Inst taste defeat for the first time

Wednesday, 13 December 2006

Round up: Inst Ladies first XI said goodbye to their undefeated record this season last weekend.

On Saturday, they lost 2-1 to UUJ seconds after a hard match.

UUJ had the advantage at half time as they converted a penalty corner just before the break and they made it 2-0 soon after the re-start.

Inst fought hard to take control and won a penalty corner with Mandy McDonald pushing out to Sandra Jackson who thumped it past the keeper.

Inst seconds found themselves in much the same position as last week, fighting hard but having to make do with a scoreless draw against Greenisland.

Ballymena

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Ballymena last Saturday with two wins and two defeats for the club.

The firsts lost 6-0 to Pegasus but the seconds were in top form, beating UUJ 5-3 at the University of Ulster.

Jackie McWilliams and Grace Henry both got two goals with the other coming from Ciara Corbett.

The fourths faced a tough match away to Dromore seconds and ended up losing 3-1, while the sixths got the only clean sheet of the day and collected full points after a comfortable 4-0 win over Dromore sixths.

Carrick

Not for the first time this season, Carrick Ladies Hockey Club's three teams recorded a "perfect nine" on Saturday afternoon, with three wins from three in last weekend's league programme.

Their first XI squeezed a 2-1 result against Omagh in Qualifying One but, it has to be said, in comparison with some of Carrick's more recent performances, this was a far from convincing display.

Omagh deservedly went ahead after only five minutes as Carrick once again got off to a slow start, but Carla Wright levelled the score early in the second half before Lorna Hill then edged them ahead.

Omagh continued to threaten for the remainder of the match and hero of the day for Carrick, was their goalkeeper, Kelly Campbell, who pulled off some excellent saves late on.

Carrick's seconds kept up the pressure on fellow front runners Derg Valley in Junior One, with a competent 4-0 win in Newry.

Their continuously impressive young centre-forward, Aimie Campbell, recorded yet another hat-trick for her team, with the remaining goal being scored by Samantha Munn.

And in Junior Three, Carrick Ladies third XI bounced back from last week's disappointing defeat in Ards to take all three points from visitors Knock.

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
