Magee lands his biggest pay-day in Euro title shot
Monday, 9 November 2009
Brian Magee will challenge Dane Mads Larsen for the vacant European super-middleweight title on January 30 in Aarhus, Denmark.
Magee's manager Pat Magee has pulled off a major coup by landing the Belfast man a second shot at the European belt, having lost a highly controversial decision to Vitali Tsypko four years ago in Germany.
Not only is Magee, ranked five by the EBU, having the opportunity to become only the 11th Irishman to win such a belt but it is understood that his management have secured a six figure purse —the biggest of his career.
The 34-year-old's career seemed to be stalling once again after he had to withdraw from a British title defence earlier this year. Having been lined up to face new champion Tony Quigley, Setanta Sports went bust and Magee's chance was gone.
Now he has landed a golden opportunity against former European champion and ex-world title challenger Larsen and manager Magee is confident he can deliver in Denmark.
“Going to Denmark is not like going to Germany. We know that Brian should get a fair crack,” said Magee.
“It's a great chance and as much as I am pleased to get him the chance there was an element of luck because the original contender, Dimitri Sartison, pulled out in order to focus on a world title fight and so the EBU declared that Brian was the next available contender.
“It has been a hard time because I've been working on a few options for Brian and I was determined to get him a meaningful fight at this stage of his career rather than an eight-rounder because he has a short time left and he needs a chance like this.
“The super-middleweight division is one of the hottest around at the moment with the Super Six event going on and it's going to open up more opportunities for other fighters.
“Brian has a great chance of winning the belt but obviously it won't be easy. If he wins then his career is really going again and there is every chance of a world title shot.
“But with the European title it would mean that he could be fighting at home again in Belfast which is what we want.”

Brian Magee is one of our most talented local fighters . His record is exempliary . His only three defeats have come against top class opponents when he lost in Nuremburg to Typsko in a European Title fight , then against former World champion Robin Read ,and most recently against Carl Froch who was on his way to winning the World Title !
Good luck Brian , you deserve another shot at the big time !
