McMorrow to let his fists do the talking for Belfast Giants
Friday, 20 November 2009
Sean McMorrow is preparing a ‘welcome to the Elite League’ message for Nottingham Panthers new-boy Mario Larocque.
And although Larocque has said his focus will be on taking all four points when his team faces the Belfast Giants in two massive back-to-back clashes this weekend, McMorrow wants something else to add to that to complete his “perfect weekend.”
Not only is Larocque in the firing line though, McMorrow is ready to sacrifice being thrown out of either tonight’s battle at the Odyssey Arena or tomorrow’s return in Nottingham by fighting twice in the same game, which means Dominic D’Amour and previous foe Kevin Bergin better watch out too.
“If I was the owner of the Nottingham Panthers I would be saying to Mario Larocque that the best thing he could do is take me on over here and help Kevin Bergin,” said McMorrow.
“He should step up to the challenge and I’m putting up the challenge to their three guys, but mainly to Larocque.
“If he wants to win the fans over — and he’s only new to the Elite League — then he should step-up and take me on.
“He says he’s only interested in two points on Friday and Saturday and not in any kind of individual title.
“What I am interested in is out-playing Nottingham, out-hitting them and getting the two points, but there is more than one way to do that.
“The perfect scenario for this weekend as far as I am concerned is to win the two games — hopefully that will be enough to take us to the top of the league — a McMorrow v Larocque contest and then McMorrow v one other.
“I can only have two fights in one game, they have three guys so any two is fine, but I’d like it to be Larocque plus one other.
“That would be brilliant, but Mario Larocque doesn’t seem up to the task or want to take on the challenge.
“I have respect for Dominic D’Amour, he has a big reputation in this league and I would love to fight him.
“Kevin Bergin I have taken on twice before and I would love round three.
“This is a chance for some of the heavyweights in this league to come together and make it an entertaining night for the fans.”
Nottingham top the Elite League table, but with only a four point advantage on the third-placed Giants, which could be wiped out by the time the teams leave the ice at the National Ice Centre tomorrow night.
The Giants also have three games in hand on their rivals, but at present that is largely irrelevant.
“This is an exciting time of year; the league is tight,” said McMorrow.
“When you are in the position we are and playing like we are you can’t wait for the games to come around and it’s going to be a big weekend for us.
“Nottingham are our biggest rivals at the minute and we’re ready to take them on.”
And player coach Steve Thornton has echoed his forward as he prepares for another epic battle
“We are definitely ready for Friday night,” said Thornton.
“We are two very evenly matched teams, both with loads of talent up front and two of the best goalies in the league.
“This is the game of the season so far and we expect our guys to bring everything they have to the table on Friday.”
Stephen Murphy, back in goal after injury, only conceded one goal in two games last weekend and continuing that form will be key to the Giants hopes of success this weekend.
