No regrets as Dokic bows out of the Australian Open
Wednesday, 28 January 2009
Jelena Dokic insisted she had no reason to be disappointed after bowing out of the Australian Open against Dinara Safina.
The Australian, who came into the grand slam tournament on a wild card, had her dream run ended by the big-hitting Russian third seed 6-4 4-6 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
But after battling back from depression and becoming estranged from her family, Dokic has re-ignited her tennis career and won back the hearts of her adopted country folk with her efforts.
Tonight’s game was just one match too far, however, as the toll of not playing at such a high level for almost three years, and a sprained ankle suffered late in her previous match, finally took its toll.
"I have really fought well this week and I have no regrets,” she said.

When i saw the game against Safina, and saw that look in her eyes of soft sadness, sudenly i remember the Joe Cocker's song "you are so beautiful" ...

You 're a sensation, just forget about the past and move forward. Hope to have you on for some more years to come.
Cheers.

There was a bad line call when she was 4-5
down in the third set that clearly unsettled
her and cost her the match.
The ball was clearly in. If she had tied and
deuced at 5-5, the mental odds, and the
chances of winning, with Safina on the ropes,
would have been in Dokic's favour.

What more could we ask: skill, determination and a graceful acknowledgement of past diffculties.
These four matches were more than good tennis, they were a test of character that this woman has passed with grace and grit.
Let us now put the shadow of the past firmly aside, and let her to get on with her job.
This is the time to recognise her achievements of today and to wish her well for the future, so that she and we may enjoy the four or five good years of high level tennis still left to her.
Welcome back, Miss Dokic. May we see many more epic tussles with you on the centre courts of the tennis world.
