Rain puts damper on Kyle’s 200th appearance for Ireland cricket team

Kyle McCallan made his 200th appearance for Ireland and New Zealand-born Regan West his debut but there was little else to get excited about at Stormont as only eight overs were possible in the second one day international against Kenya.

It means Ireland cannot lose the three-match series, which ends at the same venue tomorrow. Beyond receiving a presentation from Cricket Ireland president John Caldwell to mark what could be a unique landmark for an Ireland cricketer — no current player is within 85 caps of the Waringstown all-rounder — and conducting a couple of television interviews, McCallan enjoyed an easy day.

His captain, William Porterfield, lost the toss for the second successive match and with the ball again moving around Ireland were 18 for two when the rain arrived.

It lasted for the best part of two hours and because of the time taken getting the covers into the middle the damage had been done to the one of the run-ups and the game was called off by the umpires just after four o’clock without any more play.

Unfortunately for Porterfield and his opening partner, Gary Wilson, their scores of three and nought will go into the record books, both leg before to balls that swung back into them.

Paul Stirling and Andre Botha were not out four and 11 respectively.

West replaced Andrew White who broke a finger when fielding in Sunday’s ODI and his replacement in the ‘A’ team squad for the European Championships is Leinster’s 16-year-old leg spinner, George Dockrell. They play their first match against the hosts, Holland, today.

In the Ulster Bank Premier League, the three surviving matches were all reduced to 38 overs but were completed. Civil Service North joined North Down at the top of the table after the Comber

side yesterday suffered their first league defeat. Without Ireland players Ryan Haire, Gavin McKenna and Peter Connell, they lost to Lisburn at Wallace Park under the Duckworth Lewis system. Set 188 to win, they were bowled out for 146 and the home side did it without a major contribution from professional Gerry Strydom who was out for 18.

CSN repeated their Challenge Cup final win against Waringstown with a five wickets win at The Lawn. They reached their target of 160 with seven balls to spare thanks to an unbeaten 40 from Michael Heaney.

Bangor beat Instonians for the second successive day at Upritchard Park and Ballymena will be back in the top flight next year for the first time in eight years. Victory over Armagh yesterday won them promotion and two more wins should secure the championship.

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
