Rowing: Richard keeps it in the family as he lands bronze

It wasn’t to be a golden double for the Chambers brothers on Lake Bled with Richard having to settle for third place in the final of the lightweight fours.

The day after Peter had won his first world senior title in the lightweight pairs, his older brother couldn’t add to the two world gold medals he already has in his collection as the Australian quartet out-sprinted everyone to the line.

As always this was a tight race and at halfway the Great Britain foursome of Chambers, Paul Mattick, Rob Williams and Chris Bartley were eight tenths of a second down on the leaders Italy with Australia in second and China third.

Chambers led his team mates past the Chinese but, despite a massive sprint for the finish, they could not catch the Italians in silver or Australia in gold.

“It’s good to be on the podium again. In this event it’s so hard to keep winning consistently and to win here we knew was going to be a big ask for us. We fought hard and a bronze medal is where we’re at,” said Chambers afterwards.

“It’s good, it gives us something to fight for in our training. We’ll come back stronger next year.

We knew the Australians and Italians would go out hard, so did we, we couldn’t have done anymore and obviously it wasn’t good enough.”

Richard will now enjoy a few weeks off before the long, tough road to the Olympics begins.

“No matter what was to happen this year it’s the big one next year and that’s what we’re fighting for from now on.”

Coleraine’s Alan Campbell also had London 2012 on his mind as he stormed off the blocks in yesterday’s single sculls semi-final.

He wouldn’t be caught despite the fact that he had two former world champions closing him down at the end in the shape of Ondrej Synek and Marcel Hacker.

By reaching today’s final he secured the GB place in the event for the Olympics and barring injury or disastrous loss of form it will be Campbell on the start line at Eton Dorney next July.

Gary Neville could be key to Wayne Rooney's form at Euros

You might have thought that ruling yourself out of the first two games of football's second most important international tournament with a shocking flash of irresponsibility was quite enough to focus the mind of the nation's most gifted player.
