Sy has final say in Open

Saturday, 20 December 2008

Remember the name Sycerika McMahon.

Last night at the Ulster Open championships this 13-year-old pocket dynamo from Leander stole the show with three senior gold medals

It has been mooted for some time that former Ards swimmer McMahon was a special talent and she proved that at the Bangor Leisure Centre last night.

Such has been her incredible development that some are now even suggesting the teenager might make the Commonwealth Games team in 2010.

The golden run for McMahon on the opening night of the championships started in the 800m freestyle, a clear indication of her natural strength in the water.

McMahon, coached by Bobby Madine and Kathryn Wylie, came home in 8:57.94 to take gold ahead of Donna Marie O’Prey, seven years her senior, who clocked 9:09.01.

Even more impressive was her display in the 100m breaststroke final when she took on 19-year-old Ashleigh Hyland and 21-year-old Alison Todd, both of whom have established themselves as proven performers at this level.

McMahon charged to gold in 1:11.21, with Hyland back in 1:13.62 and Todd touching for bronze in 1:17.16.

The hat-trick was completed with another power-packed performance as she finished a huge eight seconds ahead of Enniskillen’s Chelsey Wilson in the 200m individual medley.

McMahon cruised to victory in 2:20.89 and had spectators watching in awe at just how dominant she was against Wilson, 2:28.47, and Hyland, 2:30.02.

She also managed to pick up silver in the 100m free in 58.62, behind 21-year-old Clare Dawson, 56.13.

In her main event, Commonwealth Youth Games double medallist Wilson was out on her own in the 200m backstroke, easing to victory in 2:14, seven seconds ahead of Lisburn’s Bethany Carson.

In the absence of Andrew Bree - who may compete tomorrow in the relays for Ards - clubmate Michael Dawson picked up the 200m breaststroke gold in 2:27.45.

Fellow Ards man Steven McQuillan shrugged off the effects of ‘flu to win the 100m butterfly in

57.73, while Bangor’s Robert Hoal won the 400m individual medley in 4:34.93.

City of Belfast’s Conor Leaney claimed the 100m free gold in 1:50.79, ahead of Hoal, 1:52.04 and then helped the club to 4x200m free relay gold.

Bangor’s Jordan Sloan won 50m back gold in 29.02, while City of Belfast’s 17-year-old Nicola Ferguson took the 50m ’fly title in 29.88.

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
