Spain's Shen Yanfei, who has already qualified for London 2012, with GB team member Na Liu from Northern Ireland at the international exhibition matches at Valley Leisure Centre. Looking on are Pat Hunter, Chair Table Tennis Ulster, Dominic Walsh, Chair Sport NI, Mayor of Newtownabbey Billy Webb, Mayoress Pat Webb and Rosalie Flanagan from DCAL
Newtownabbey is living the Olympic dream this week with a women’s table tennis clash between Great Britain and Spain, part of a London 2012 training camp at the Valley Leisure Centre.
The five-day pre-Olympic training camp concludes tomorrow and has generated much interest within the borough and beyond.
Spain were flattered by their 7-1 margin of victory, Belfast's Na Liu appearing for Team GB.
Former Irish international star Jonny Cowan — who played professionally in China and France — acted as MC at the international showdown, which attracted a full house.
Cowan is currently making a name for himself as a commentator, recently winning a top award.
The training camp will play an important part in the selection of the Great Britain team, with the coaches also making themselves available to train local players.
Dominic Walsh, Chair of Sport Northern Ireland, said: “As well as the benefits for the athletes taking part in the training event as they work to gain qualification for London 2012, we also welcome the benefits and legacy to be gained locally.
“This week-long event is free of charge and open to the public so local schools, clubs and young athletes can all experience high performance sport at first hand.
“Special Olympics Ulster team members from Newtownabbey Racers will also make maximum use of taster sessions.
“Junior and senior squads will benefit directly as they will receive world-class coaching.
“This type of opportunity is does not come round every day.”
Table Tennis Ulster Chair Pat Hunter said: “TTU is so proud of Na Liu who is on the brink of gaining GB Olympic selection.”
DCAL’s Rosalie Flanagan said she was “delighted” to welcome the elite table tennis stars to Northern Ireland.
