A blaze of glory in Portrush at beach volleyball tournament

On the ball: Alan McKnight, Irena Aska and Johnny Workman will their prizes from the Ballymoney Blaze competition

Lots of blazing sunshine shone down on the weekend Ballymoney Blaze Volleyball Club's annual weekend Beach Volleyball tournament in Portrush.

The men's event brought some great matches to the East Strand before locals Alan McKnight and Johnny Workman met Indoor champions, Lisburn Lynx's pair of Davey Hamilton and Miro Pilch in the final.

Greater mobility and defence on the heavy sand edged McKnight and Workman into a lead to win the first set but hard hitting from Hamilton and Pilch brought an equaliser winning the second set.

The deciding third set was edge of the seat stuff before the Ballymoney pair took the title by two sets to one.

Indoor league winners Queen's University Belfast went through the past season undefeated.

And two key members Aska Wiezowska and Irena Mihneva continued their winning ways on the beach at Portrush, taking the Ladies' Pairs Titles.
