Annadale begin quest to break cup duck

Ulster champions Annadale are in Dublin today to start the ball rolling on their bid to break an Irish Senior Cup jinx.

The Dale are bursting to get into Europe for the first time but all attempts at landing the oldest knock-out trophy in world hockey have failed to date.

Today the big guns join the competition at the third round stage and it's Leinster side Fingal who stand in the way of Graeme Francey and Andrew Smyth's lads at the Aer Lingus complex.

The Dale should progress especially if Ian Hamilton continues his prolific goalscoring form, but they know that they can expect a lot more difficult games as the competition progresses if they are to break their duck.

Lisnagarvey, Banbridge and Cookstown are all expected to go through today's stages too but the other Ulster giant -Instonians - face a huge hurdle in Pembroke Wanderers at Shaw's Bridge.Inst have had success against Pembroke in the past but the Dubliners are currently in top form at the moment, with five internationals and one former international in their ranks.

They lead the Leinster League and the Justin Sherriff and Gordon Elliott partnership is thriving, with Elliott claiming four goals in last week's game.

But Inst won't roll over easily, and there's a belief that they can make it a first win on their new Shaw's Bridge pitch, even though the odds are stacked against them.

Garvey take on Corinthian, the team they put six past last season; Bann go to Dublin YMCA; and Cookstown face Dublin University.
