Barnes storms through to close in on a medal

Paddy Barnes will be hoping to spark a major medal drive at the European senior championships in Moscow after a weekend of success for the Irish team.

Light-flyweight Barnes kicked off the campaign by, defeating Hungarian Istvan Lakatoz 12-4 in their last 16 encounter and that was followed by wins for John Joe Nevin, John Joe Joyce, Darren O'Neill and Kenny Egan.

Yesterday, Egan, Joyce and O'Neill were victorious again and joined Barnes (pictured) in the last eight, leaving them all one win away from a medal.

Today, Donegal's Tyrone McCullagh as well as Nevin, Ray Moylette and Eric Donovan shoot for the last eight. For Barnes to add a European medal to his Olympic bronze he will have to overcome England's Thomas Stubbs in Wednesday's quarter-final, while on the same day Joyce faces Taras Shelestyuk of the Ukraine for a medal. Yesterday welterweight Joyce outsmarted Bulgarian Evegeny Borisov 9-1.

Olympic silver medallist Egan was simply a class apart as he dominated Albanian Alexsander Ramo from the opening bell before taking a 15-2 decision.

The night got even better when O'Neill handed out a harsh boxing lesson to Great Britain’s Anthony Ogogo. Middleweight O'Neill was never in any trouble as he picked his blows with great confidence to win 10-1.
