Bowls: Greenfield makes his case for Irish recall

Myles Greenfield gave the Ireland selectors a little nudge by winning the Private Greens League fours championship at Jordanstown on Saturday.

The big Dunbarton skip turned in a top performance to bring the title back to Gilford for the first time since 2006.

Greenfield was axed from the Irish side last year — and was then dumped from the PGL team for this season’s Inter-association Championship. He responded in the most positive manner — and now has the opportunity of parading his talent in the Irish Championships at Old Bleach next month.

Greenfield was joined by Michael Higgins, Andrew Hughes and DJ Wilson for a final showdown against David McRandal’s Larne combination.

It may required a last bowl winner in the semis against Jim Baker’s Ballymena, but there was never any sweat about this one as the Dunbarton boys cantered home 23-10.

Mark McPeak is the new open singles champion. The Belmont player defeated Ulster Transport’s Alistair Moore 21-8 in the final.

“I’m over the moon,” he said. “It’s the second time I’ve won the title, but this is much sweeter than my 2005 success.

“It’s been a long road since my first round game in late April. But having the trophy in my hand makes it all worth while.”

Meanwhile, Gary McCloy bridged a 16-year gap by winning the Provincial Bowling Association’s singles championship at Coleraine.

\[Peter Hutcheon\]McCloy defeated Ballymoney’s Gary Kelly – they’ll both represent Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in India – 21-12 in the final.

Earlier, McCloy was joined by Ian McClure, who is also bound for New Delhi, on the winners’ podium after winning the pairs title, following a 25-12 victory over Coleraine’s Alistair Davison and Mervyn McKeeman. Results: Private Greens League Championships: Open Singles: M McPeak (Belmont) 21 A Moore (Ulster Transport) 8.
